Faux Vogue: An Exercise in Editing

Magazine photography is interesting. It's artistic, creative, eye catching - offering a look into the minds of the photographer, the stylists, the subject. I figured that as someone who is both not famous and not a model that I would have an incredibly slim chance of being featured on the cover of any magazine, let alone Vogue, so I put my Photoshop skills to use and made my own magazine edit.

I started off inspired by the recent covers that Connor Storrie (of Heated Rivalry fame) had done recently, and the music of the 70's band Heart (namely Magic Man and Barracuda) so I dug out some of the coolest items of clothing I could find, and wacked on some makeup. This was not the direction I expected it to go in, but unexpected surprises are sometimes the best.

Armed with a tripod, ring light, iPhone 11 camera and the corner of my games room, I shot a series of photos. Some excellent, some a bit too weird for posting, and then I sat down and edited the doorframes and power points out of the images. Black and white felt like the correct way to go with these to add drama and elegance. Colour would've been cool, but it just didn't have the same impact and the images ended up striking.

Maybe one day I'll grace the cover of a magazine. I can't decide if that's too conceited of me, but time will tell.
